A Nigerian e-hailing platform, ProTaxi, has commenced operations in Abuja with a reported rollout of 1,000 electric vehicles, offering commuters another transport option while creating potential employment opportunities for drivers.

The initiative, developed by Promiseland, is designed to use technology and electric mobility to expand access to transport services and create income opportunities for individuals and their families.

The Presidency has welcomed the initiative, according to a statement announcing the company’s entry into the Abuja market.

The rollout comes as Nigeria continues to explore alternative transport solutions in response to rising fuel costs and growing interest in cleaner energy options.

Electric vehicles can reduce dependence on petrol and diesel and may lower operating costs, depending on electricity prices, vehicle maintenance expenses and the availability of charging infrastructure.

For passengers, the success of the service will depend on factors such as fares, vehicle availability, reliability, safety and the ease of booking rides through the platform.

The initiative could also create opportunities for drivers and other workers in the mobility sector if the reported fleet deployment translates into sustained operations and viable earnings.

However, the announcement did not provide details on the number of vehicles immediately available for commercial service, charging facilities, driver recruitment arrangements or the company’s fare structure.

Further information on these issues would help commuters assess the affordability and accessibility of the service.

The launch adds to the growing discussion about the role of local technology companies in improving urban mobility and expanding employment opportunities in Nigeria.
